"Gemini Man" is proof that no amount of innovation or filmmaking vision can overcome a bad script. And we know Will Smith certainly can't overcome a bad writing - he's been trying a lot recently ("After Earth," "Bright," "Collateral Beauty," etc.). In "Gemini Man" he stars as a long-serving government hit-man who's ready to retire, but his old bosses are afraid of what he may know so they sick another assassin on him.
Turns out, that other hit-man is a highly trained younger clone of Smith - a digital creation for the screen that looks like Smith back in his "Fresh Prince" days.
The plot goes exactly as you'd expect, and the dialogue is deadly dumb. At least some of the action scenes are cool - especially the Smith v Smith brawl. But then there's the scene with Old Smith getting beaten up by a motorcycle, which is actually stupider than it sounds.
It's a shame because Oscar winning Director Ang Lee clearly wants to do something fresh here. He shot the movie in 3D and high frame rate - giving it that soap opera look many viewers don't like. The idea is to make it look hyper-realistic, but during action scenes, especially, it makes the movie look phony. It's the second movie Lee has shot this way, and at this point it kind of feels like trying to make "fetch" happen (it's never going to happen, Gretchen).
But I admire Lee's audaciousness, and Smith gives two good performances especially under computer imaging. But "Gemini Man" is done in by a predictable story and bad writing. In the end, it's more "Gemini Man, I wish this was better."
