Police block off SW Lubbock apartment complex for hours, stand-off with man
Lubbock Police and SWAT responded to a man threatening to harm himself at an apartment complex in southwest Lubbock early Wednesday morning.
Responding officers to the Stonebridge Apartments near 66th and Milwaukee found the man with a gun in the gated parking lot. Police set up a perimeter, blocking off entrances. They went door to door notifying residents to shelter in place. Negotiations continued for about three hours.
According to an LPD media release, based on the negotiations and the continued threat as the man became more agitated, officers saw an opportunity to disarm him by using beanbag rounds and a taser.
Despite these attempts to disarm him, officers were unable to prevent him from turning the gun on himself. He died at the scene around 5:30 a.m.
LPD Victim Services were on-scene, offering support to family members and officers involved.
FOX34 typically does not report on suicides when it is in a private setting. This story is being reported because many residents were either prevented from entering the complex or were asked to shelter in place. This policy is not to diminish pain felt by victims' families and friends. We try to adhere to the Radio Television Digital News Association's guidelines on reporting, to minimize harm.
