Colon cancer is one of the leading cancers that can be prevented by early detection. However, a colonoscopy is a procedure many decide to put off.

Covenant Health is offering free colonoscopy screenings Saturday, March 23. This is for patients over age 50 or those who have a family history of colon cancer.

To qualify, it must be your first exam and meet the need for financial assistance.

"If we start doing a colonoscopy at the age of 50 and find those polyps and remove them, you're never going to have colon cancer," Dr. Elias Ghandour said. "It's a very easy way of preventing a major killer and the expenses and the problems that come with it."

Covenant's goal is to treat 50 patients who meet the requirements.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 15. If you are interested call (806) 725-7448 to apply. The screenings will be at the Covenant Endoscopy Center, at 3610 21st Street.
