UPDATED: Four children dead in house fire near Wolfforth, father arrested
Four children were killed in a house fire near Wolfforth Wednesday night. The father has been arrested.
Four children were killed when a fire tore through a mobile home outside of Wolfforth, southwest of Lubbock, late Wednesday night. This is in the 14000 block of County Road 1430.
Investigators do not know what started it.
According to the Lubbock Sheriff's Office, Wesley Lance Harvey, 28, left three of his children and one step-child alone in the home. He was watching the kids while his wife was at work.
The victims are:
- Weslynn Harvey, 2
- Twilah Harvey, 3
- Kenneth Harvey, 4
- Elijah Lucas, 7
A warrant shows Harvey left the children at home for about an hour while they were sleeping.
Rob Stevens lives just down the road.
"I was playing a video game and, you know, my wife looked out the window and she's like 'oh my God, the house is on fire'," Stevens said. "And I looked out, we came outside and stood for probably 10 or 15 minutes and the whole back half of the house was in flames."
"I just saw them brought the two kids out and they were doing CPR in the ambulance," Stevens said. "Just gut-wrenching. Just, and now I'm knowing everything else, it's just...it's bad."
According to the warrant, all four children had obvious burn and smoke-related injuries. They did not appear to be breathing.
The youngest, Weslynn, was pronounced dead on-scene. The others were rushed to the hospital, where they later died.
"It brought back a lot of memories for me," Stevens said. "You know, it's kind of close to home. My mom died in a trailer house. And those things can go up real quick and you've got kids at home and no parents? Accidents happen and people get hurt."
Harvey was originally arrested for other, unrelated charges. He is now charged with four counts of abandoning and endangering a child, criminal neglect. Harvey is being held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
