IRVING, Texas – Texas Tech’s Austin Green was selected as the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week and co-Newcomer of the Week the conference announced on Monday. The award covers the Red Raiders’ five games played, March 14-19, to earn his first Big 12 weekly awards.
In five games, two versus UT Arlington and three against then-No. 12 Oklahoma State, Green hit .526 (10-of-19) with 10 RBIs and three home runs and six runs scored. Green had multiple hits in four of Tech's five games played last week, including multi-hit games in each contest versus its Big 12 foe. The junior transfer registered a .640 on-base percentage, a 1.053 slugging percentage and a 1.693 OPS for the week. The second baseman was also involved in four of the five double plays the Red Raiders turned during the week.
In the three-game Big 12 series alone, Green owned a .545 batting average (6-of-11) with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs. One of the two bombs was a grand slam on Sunday to aid a decisive 10-run fifth inning en route to a 12-1 run-rule win. He added an RBI single in that fifth-inning outburst in a second at-bat to push across a single-game career-high fifth RBI.
Green is the first Big 12 baseball student-athlete this season to haul in both the player of the week and newcomer of the week award in the same week. In 2022, Tech’s Ty Coleman (Feb. 28, 2022) and Kansas’ Caleb Upshaw (May 2, 2022) grabbed both awards at the same time last season.
Joining Green (player and co-newcomer) for those selected for Big 12 Baseball Weekly Awards for games ending March 19 were Baylor’s Will Rigney (pitcher) and Oklahoma’s Dakota Harris (co-newcomer).
