Matt Ernst is FOX34 chief meteorologist. You can watch him on Lubbock News Now, weeknights 6 to 9 on FOX34 News Now; and on FOX34 News at Nine. You can also listen to his updates on 93.1 Texas FM, 93.7 The Eagle, Double T 97.3, Oldies 97.7, 100.7 The Score, Magic 106.5 and 107.7 YesFM.
Matt joined the FOX34 team in 2006. He previously worked at then-student-run KTXT-FM as well as radio stations KFYO and KKAM. He interned in the weather department at KLBK/KAMC. Matt is a Texas Tech alumnus, with a degree in broadcast journalism, atmospheric science minor. He holds the broadcast meteorology certificate from Mississippi State University.
Matt has gained first-hand knowledge of South Plains severe weather as a trained storm spotter. In June 2005, on his first storm chase, he saw several tornadoes across the eastern FOX34 viewing area. Since then he's covered just about every kind of weather here, from tornadoes and massive hail to dust storms, extreme heat, ice storms, blizzards and plenty of beautiful, sunny days. He's a true weather nerd, following the weather, its technology, research and anything else connected both while at "work" and away.
Matt is a member of Young Professionals of Lubbock, the Texas Tech Alumni Association and National Weather Association. He serves as a board member and past president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock; and as member of the National Weather Service's local chapter of the Storm Ready program. He volunteers for the Lubbock Area United Way as a loaned executive, helping local businesses run annual campaigns. In 2016 the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce recognized Matt as part of its 20 Under 40 class. He's a 2017 graduate of the Chamber's Leadership Lubbock program.
He enjoys visiting with students about weather, either at the station or in their classroom. Matt is a life-long Texan, previously living in San Antonio and neighboring town La Vernia.
He married wife Taylor in 2010. They've rescued two pets, cat Maeby and dog Harry. Arrested Development fans will understand the cat's name.
